How to cure diarrhea folk remedies at home

1. Over-the-counter drugs
With your doctor’s supervision, several over-the-counter medications can help with diarrhea. These medications include bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), attapulgite (Kaopectate), and loperamide (Imodium). While these drugs can relieve the symptoms of diarrhea, they don’t treat the underlying cause.

If you have chronic diarrhea, you shouldn’t use these drugs without your doctor’s consent. Chronic diarrhea is a case of diarrhea that lasts more than 14 days.

You should be especially cautious if your child has diarrhea. Dehydration resulting from diarrhea can be dangerous for very young children. Speak with your doctor before giving them any medications, especially those containing salicylates or aspirin.

2. Yogurt
Yogurt is a great home remedy that you should try first. Don’t ever worry about his sour flavor as it contains probiotics to help balance your stomach and maintain the digestive tract. Good bacteria inside a bowl of yogurt has the power to recover you from a detrimental diarrhea. This is absolutely not new to those who are conscious of such healthy foods.

Direction: Two bowls of yogurt is the suggested amount you should consume to fight against normal diarrhea. It is better to eat the one with no flavor and to increase your appetite, you should associate it with a banana.

Note: Yogurt with flavor is also acceptable but don’t use excessively. Twice a day is almost the ideal intake. Remember to buy the yogurt inside the store.

3. Liquid Food Products
There are some people who may find this a bit weird because the stools that are coming out of the body are already in liquid form so how can the stools become harder with the intake of liquid food products? Do remember that liquid food can be absorbed by the body better so that the nutrients will not go to waste.

What You Need

Food Processor
Blender
Different Food Products
Soups

Directions
Do remember that for some of the items that are too solid, the food processor can be used to break down those items. If the food processor is not enough, the blender can also be used.

For people who do not want to fuss too much, making soups can be a good idea provided that the soup will have enough nutrients to keep people hydrated throughout the day.

4. Avoid certain foods
Watching what you eat and drink is very important when you have diarrhea. Dehydration from diarrhea can be fatal in young children and older adults. The most important thing you can do is to keep hydrated.

Alcohol, milk, soda, and other carbonated or caffeinated drinks may make symptoms worse. Fried and greasy foods, as well as dairy products, are usually not well tolerated. You can decrease bloating by avoiding fruits and vegetables that can cause gas, such as:

broccoli
beans
peas
corn
prunes
chickpeas
peppers

5.BRAT Diet
There are some people who have heard about the BRAT diet but have never tried it in the past. If you have already tried this out before when you had diarrhea, what can you say about it? Do you think it actually works?

For those who do not know what BRAT is, it stands for Banana, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. If you have not realized it yet, these are just the four things that you would need to include in your diet.

What You Need:

Banana
Rice
Applesauce
Toast
Directions

What you can do is mix up small portions of each food product for each meal that you are going to take in. Do remember that it is okay if you mix in rice with soups so that it will have some taste.

Do avoid putting butter on your toast though because this might further aggravate your condition. Desserts are so much easier to eat because banana and apple sauce both taste good.

Note: Remember to always eat in small portions to not upset the stomach further.

6. Ginger
Ginger is known to be an effective treatment for food poisoning and can also help you stay away from cramps and abdominal pain which are the main symptoms of typical diarrhea. Why does ginger have the fabulous power? Ginger is accompanied with anti-inflammatory properties that can ease irritated bowels and promote digestive activities.

Direction: Prepare a small piece of ginger. If you desire to make the best of it for your diarrhea, you should slice it into small pieces and mix it with a teaspoon of honey. It tastes not so good for those who don’t familiar with its flavor before.

Note: If you are sensitive to spicy foods, you can turn to ginger supplements instead of using fresh ginger. Don’t drink much water then to let ginger perform its role smoothly.

7. Probiotics
Probiotics are natural, over-the-counter remedies for diarrhea. They’re essentially “live bacteria” that exist in certain foods like yogurt. They also come in powder or pill form.

Antibiotics often kill off the “good bacteria” that live in your intestine. This can lead to diarrhea. Probiotics may help restore the good bacterial in your gut. Lactobacillus GG, acidophilus, and bifidobacteria are three common types of probiotics.

8. Peppermint
A lot of people only know about peppermint as something that is used for different candies. There are times when peppermint can also be used to flavor different drinks. Peppermint is also a good ingredient to use to help relieve stomach problems.

What You Need:

Sprigs of Mint
Hot Water
Directions

The first thing that you need to do is make sure that the sprigs of mint that you are going to place are clean. You can then steep a few sprigs of mint with hot water for a few minutes. You can drink it when you feel that the water is not hot enough anymore to burn your tongue.

9. Homeopathy
When other solutions haven’t worked, some people turn to traditional homeopathic supplements for relief. These supplements include:

Arsenicum album
Veratrum album
sulphur
Podophyllum
Calcarea carbonica
chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
mercurius
Each of these remedies claims to treat a specific type of diarrhea. Trying any of these remedies on your own isn’t recommended. These treatments have not been consistently proven in medical trials to be effective. Professionals who practice homeopathy should consider all your symptoms, as well as your health history, to determine a diagnosis and treatment. Speak with your doctor before trying these diarrhea remedies.

10. Bananas
Ripe bananas are rich in pectin which is a water-soluble fiber to ease the tiring symptoms of diarrhea. Besides, the content of potassium – an electrolyte – is likely to enhance the vital functions in the body. Diarrhea would be much relieved with a lot of supplements.

Direction: You can eat banana alone as a snack or along with yogurt. It is quite comfortable to take advantage of this natural treatment without sophisticated directions.

Note: Don’t forget to choose ripe bananas or else you will experience some side effects then.

11. White Rice
There are some people who avoid eating white rice like plague because it does not have a very distinct taste. It can be very good with other food products but when having diarrhea, mixing it in with other food might not be that wise.

What You Need:

Plain White Rice
Directions

The main reason why eating plain white rice can be effective is probably because the rice can help the stools become harder. Eat the white rice without any other sauce or other spices to make sure that there will be no problems later on.

Note: As the diarrhea improves, try eating more and more plain, white rice.

It is important to know about diarrhea
Diarrhea, also spelled diarrhoea, is the condition of having at least three loose or liquid bowel movements each day. It often lasts for a few days and can result in dehydration due to fluid loss. Signs of dehydration often begin with loss of the normal stretchiness of the skin and irritable behaviour. This can progress to decreased urination, loss of skin color, a fast heart rate, and a decrease in responsiveness as it becomes more severe. Loose but non-watery stools in babies who are breastfed, however, may be normal.

The most common cause is an infection of the intestines due to either a virus, bacteria, or parasite; a condition known as gastroenteritis. These infections are often acquired from food or water that has been contaminated by stool, or directly from another person who is infected. It may be divided into three types: short duration watery diarrhea, short duration bloody diarrhea, and if it lasts for more than two weeks, persistent diarrhea. The short duration watery diarrhea may be due to an infection by cholera, although this is rare in the developed world. If blood is present it is also known as dysentery. A number of non-infectious causes may also result in diarrhea, including hyperthyroidism, lactose intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, a number of medications, and irritable bowel syndrome. In most cases, stool cultures are not required to confirm the exact cause.

Prevention of infectious diarrhea is by improved sanitation, clean drinking water, and hand washing with soap. Breastfeeding for at least six months is also recommended as is vaccination against rotavirus. Oral rehydration solution (ORS), which is clean water with modest amounts of salts and sugar, is the treatment of choice. Zinc tablets are also recommended. These treatments have been estimated to have saved 50 million children in the past 25 years. When people have diarrhea it is recommended that they continue to eat healthy food and babies continue to be breastfed. If commercial ORS are not available, homemade solutions may be used. In those with severe dehydration, intravenous fluids may be required. Most cases; however, can be managed well with fluids by mouth. Antibiotics, while rarely used, may be recommended in a few cases such as those who have bloody diarrhea and a high fever, those with severe diarrhea following travelling, and those who grow specific bacteria or parasites in their stool. Loperamide may help decrease the number of bowel movements but is not recommended in those with severe disease.

About 1.7 to 5 billion cases of diarrhea occur per year. It is most common in developing countries, where young children get diarrhea on average three times a year. Total deaths from diarrhea are estimated at 1.26 million in 2013 – down from 2.58 million in 1990. In 2012, it was the second most common cause of deaths in children younger than five (0.76 million or 11 %) . Frequent episodes of diarrhea are also a common cause of malnutrition and the most common cause in those younger than five years of age. Other long term problems that can result include stunted growth and poor intellectual development.
