Day of Russian Science - February 8. June 7, 1999 was established by the decree of the Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin.
The holiday was first celebrated during the celebration of the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
History This holiday is timed to the date of foundation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, established by order of Emperor Peter I by decree of the government of the Senate on January 28 (February 8, according to the new style) of 1724.
In the USSR, the Day of Science was celebrated on the third Sunday of April, since in 1918 between 18 and 25 April Lenin composed "A sketch of the plan for scientific and technical work", which was the actual recognition of the Councils of Science. Until now, many scientific teams celebrate the Day of Science "according to the old style," that is, on the third Sunday in April (in 2017 the holiday falls on April 16).
